August 1 - Emancipation Day

Updated: Aug 5, 2020

August 1st, 1834 was the date upon which chattel slavery ended throughout the British Empire, including Canada, through the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833.

The Royal Commonwealth Society stands for freedom, equality, and equity of all people. To acknowledge this:

- RCS Canada released a Press Statement on Racism and Equality;

- then yesterday RCS Toronto hosted an inaugural global Zoom dialogue on emancipation with speakers from Canada, the U.K., Ghana, and Nigeria; and

- going forward we will be posting information designed to promote education, understanding, respect, pride, and friendship among all peoples and racial groups as we work to address stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination.
