The Commonwealth - "A Growing Force for Good in the World"

The Commonwealth is a voluntary association among 56 independent countries, that promote commonwealth values: DEMOCRACY; HUMAN RIGHTS; AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, aided by more than 80 Commonwealth organizations. 
 
  • Any country that promotes Commonwealth values can join The Commonwealth. (In 2022, 2 additional Francophonie countries joined.)
  • Our combined population of 2.6 billion is a third of the global population.
  • The Commonwealth combined GDP is almost CDN$17 trillion.  Bilateral costs for trading partners in Commonwealth countries are on average 19 per cent less than between those in non-member countries.
  • Half of the top 20 global emerging cities are in the Commonwealth.
  • Seven of the top 10 countries in the Ibrahim Index of African Governance, which measures rule of law, human rights, participation, human development and sustainable economic opportunity, are Commonwealth members.
  • Global Gender Gap Index, 2024: Rwanda and New Zealand are among the six countries worldwide to have achieved gender parity in parliament; 7 out of 10 girls in the Commonwealth, attend secondary school; and the pan-Commonwealth average for female labour force participation is 53.89 per cent. New Zealand and Namibia rank among the top 8 in the World in gender equality.  
  • Youth Development Index 2023: Singapore ranks number 1 in the world, and 9 other Commonwealth countries rank in the top 51 in the world.
  • Since 1991, 12 Commonwealth member countries have moved to multi-party democracy from military or one-party rule.
